FIVE IN FIVE: FACULTY HIGHLIGHT
Get to know Cindy Puga, MSN, RN - Faculy, DPN
1. Who influenced or inspired you to enter into the medical field?
My cousin, Sandy DelaFuente. When she became a nurse I was in the 6th grade. She sent our family a pinning picture. She had her white uniform on and a white cap and it was then that I decided I also wanted to become a nurse. Throughout my nursing career, she has been a great mentor!
2. What is your biggest challenge as an instructor?
I am a relatively new instructor and as I am preparing for a lecture, my challenge comes as I am reading the text: I begin to think and tell myself the following: "____ is important; oh I should tell them about _____; and oooh ____ is important." I want to teach the students everything! I have to step back and remind myself that the ultimate responsibility for preparation lies with the student and it is my duty to highlight the chapter and impart my knowledge via examples of my past experiences. The rest of the learning is up to the students!
3. What do you miss about being a kid?
Not having a care in the world! In the summers we would run barefoot to the nearby elementary school library to check out books. The pavement was so hot my bothers and I had to alternate grass, pavement, grass, pavement. My mom would be so upset with us about not wearing shoes and she would say, "people are going to think we are too poor to buy shoes!"
4. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet and why?
Mother Theresa. She was a person of very few words but the words she said spoke volumes on how we should live, treat each other and care for each other. She lived simply and did not worry about anything. She had total trust and faith in God. That is so inspiring.
5. What do you know for sure?
I know for sure that LIFE IS TOO SHORT! Sometimes we are so involved in the "Rat Race" that we forget to take time for ourself and the important things! We have to work hard and play hard! I strive to do the best job I can do at work and at play! We have to balance our time between our job and our family and our self. In rejuvenating self, we become a better person, family member and worker.
