Nurses should be caring and sympathetic, able to accept responsibility, make decisions, and work with and supervise others. RNs need physical and emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stress.
Today's job prospects for RNs are excellent due to a national nursing shortage. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the demand for RNs is expected to grow by 623,156 jobs or 27% from 2002 to 2012. (2006-2007, Occupational Outlook Handbook, US Department of Labor).
