Surgical technologists, also known as surgical or operating room technicians or scrubs, are integral members of the surgical team. Important duties performed include preparing the operating room suite, selecting instruments and equipment, creating and maintaining the sterile field, handing instruments, equipment, and supplies to the surgeon, and counting equipment, such as needles, sponges, and instruments, to ensure that nothing is left inside the patient. After surgery, the surgical technologist removes used instruments, equipment and supplies, and ensures they are sent for appropriate sterilization process. These dynamic individuals provide patient care before, during, and after surgery working under the medical supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or surgeons.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the need for surgical technologists is expected to grow by 20175 jobs or 27.9% between 2002 and 2012. (2006-2007, Occupational Outlook Handbook, US Department of Labor). Wages in San Antonio, TX average $36,785 dependent upon employer and employee credentials and experience.
