If caring is you’re calling, the Phlebotomy Program at the Baptist School of Health Professions provides the education and skills training necessary to move into this exciting career.

This Phlebotomy course is designed to develop entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to perform a variety of blood collection methods. Student will learn proper techniques of venipuncture and universal precautions. The methods will be inclusive of use of vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood cultures equipment, and specimen collection on individuals across the life span. Emphasis on reduction of risk of health-care associated infections, accuracy of client identification, accuracy in handling and labeling of specimens, quality phlebotomy, processing, accessioning and effectiveness of communication among members of the health care team. Practicum experience coordinated with System hospitals to gain experiences in dermal and venipunctures.

 Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood samples from patients for lab analysis, blood donations and other uses. Most phlebotomists work in hospitals, although some work in clinics, ambulatory services or doctor's offices. Phlebotomists are also responsible for preparing blood samples for analysis, taking vital signs, interviewing patients and labeling specimens.

A phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who is trained to obtain blood samples from patients. They may take blood from a patient for a laboratory test or for a blood donation. The Phlebotomists on occasion may also take finger-prick hemoglobin tests. 

The salary for phlebotomist in San Antonio, TX average $33,253 (CBSalary.com 2010).  Actual salaries and employment opportunities may vary depending upon geographic location, market employment trends by local area, employer size, employee experience, and employee credentials. Prospective students should research the local employment opportunities as a part of their decision-making processes.
