If caring is your calling, the Surgical Technologist Program at the Baptist School of Health Professions provides the education and skills training necessary to move into this exciting career.Upon completion, the graduate will earn an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology and the candidate will be prepared to take the National Certification  in Surgical  Technology. Certification is required for employment in Texas as a surgical technologist.

Surgical technologists, also known as surgical or operating room techs or scrubs, are integral members of the surgical team. Important duties performed include preparing the operating room suite, selecting instruments and equipment, creating and maintaining the sterile field, handing instruments, equipment, and supplies to the surgeon, and counting equipment, such as needles, sponges, and instruments, to ensure that nothing is left inside the patient. After surgery, the surgical technologist removes used instruments, equipment and supplies, and ensures they are sent for appropriate sterilization process. These dynamic individuals provide patient care before, during, and after surgery working under the medical supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or surgeons.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the need for surgical technologists is expected to grow faster than average or 25% between 2008 and 2018. Job prospects will be best for technologists who are certified and for those willing to relocate.  (2010-2011, Occupational Outlook Handbook, US Department of Labor). Wages in San Antonio, TX average $37,379 (CBSalary.com 2010) wages are dependent upon employer and employee credentials and experience.   Actual salaries and employment opportunities may vary depending upon geographic location, market employment trends by local area, employer size, employee experience, and employee credentials. Prospective students should research the local employment opportunities as a part of their decision-making processes. 

 

Prerequisites
Math - 3 semester credit hours ( Any college level math but not remedial math)

English - 3 semester credit hours (Any college level English, composition, speech, communication)

Length: 2 year - Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology
